The turbocharger is the defining component of the 1.0 EcoBoost — it’s what gives this small 3-cylinder engine its punchy, responsive performance. When the turbo fails, you’ll notice a significant loss of power, excessive black or blue smoke, a loud whining or grinding noise from the engine bay, oil consumption, or the engine going into limp mode. Left unattended, a failing turbo can cause catastrophic engine damage through oil starvation or foreign object ingestion.
This direct-fit replacement features the integrated cast iron exhaust manifold and turbine housing unique to the 1.0 EcoBoost — a compact twin-scroll design that spools up rapidly for instant throttle response. Important installation notes:
- Always prime the turbo with fresh engine oil before starting the engine after fitting
- Replace the engine oil and oil filter at the same time as the turbo
- Check and clean the oil feed pipe before fitting — a blocked feed pipe is the most common cause of premature turbo failure
- Allow the engine to idle for 2–3 minutes before driving to allow oil to circulate through the new turbo bearing
