A faulty MAF sensor on the 1.0 EcoBoost is one of the most common causes of poor fuel economy, rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, black smoke, and engine warning lights. The MAF sensor measures the volume and density of air entering the engine so the ECU can calculate the correct fuel injection quantity — when it fails or gets contaminated, the whole fuel management system is thrown off.
